This was a difficult thing to do, because it ment I would be damaging my beautiful model. But... It has to be done. The plastic on this model is very thick, so you have to take care when cutting these panels out with an exacto blade. The hole in the center was cut out so I would have room to work with some of the lighting effects for the lower dome. After the holes were cut I then airbrushed this color "C" so I could begin the next dreaded step...... https://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=23931124 23931124 PLE Lower Saucer Aztec Pattern - 1 The cumbersome "AZTEC" patern on the hull. There are several ways to do this patern, I chose to use that wonderful blue masking tape because 1) the gum on the tape does not stick to and rip your paint off the model when you're finished, 2) It's easier to see your coverage when you're airbrushing with lighter colors. This is how I made the Aztec patern for the upper and lower saucer. First I copied and cut out a wedge of the pattern that was included with the kit. Then I had a left over piece of styrene which I then used as my compass.measuring the different horizontal points on the wedge I then marked off each of those points on the piece of styrene then drilled holes on all of those points. The holes have to be big enough to stick both a pencil and the tip of an exacto blade through to cut the blue masking tape. https://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=23931125 23931125 PLE Lower Saucer Aztec Pattern - 2 Now, you may ask what surface do I cut the tape on? Well, I had an old storm window with a frame on it, that was laying around. So, I cleaned it up, then I lay about 7 or 8 strips of the masking tape down on the glass so there are no spaces between each strip. The glass was only wide to do half of the saucer at a time. First, I build up some tape at the anchor point for a pushpin tohold the compass in place. Then I draw with the pencil all of the lines I'm going to be needing for the mask. With a fresh exacto blade I then cut over those lines so the curve is nice and smooth. In this picture you can also see some of the vertical cuts that I will use. I used other reference photos, mainly black and white ones, to put additional details on, mainly the ones closer to the lower dome. It looks great, right? There's just one problem though. I messed up the gray stripe and the ring before I finished the color"Q" When you do this part of the ship, do the gray details and any other details your going to add to it FIRST! The reason being is that color "Q" and any other metal colored paints are the only ones that the Blue mask tape will damage. I then took several grades of emery paper and sanded the inside of the clear dish which gave the impression of frosted glass.
