Drydock Gets A Facelift http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/ Drydock Gets A Facelift Pic 1 Pulling apart the comtrol panel The model is shrouded with plastic to prevent dust from getting all over the details. As you can imagine this model is very hard to clean. First, I've removed the old control panel and I've started to trim off about and inch from the width of the display case. This will make it a little easier to get the case through the doorways. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255088 57255088 Pic 2 - Adding a pull-out control panel I originaly wanted to have the controls pull out from underneath the display case so I've disconnected the wiring and I'm going to rebuild the control panel. This time all of the buttons will be labeled. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255089 57255089 Pic 3 - Replacing the Bottom panel This sheet is going to be the bottom of the display case. Before some of the wires were hanging out from the bottom a bit, so now it will all be sealed up. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255090 57255090 Pic 4 - A New Face Plate Here is the new faceplate for the control panel. This is actually the second one as I messed up big time on the first one. Fortunately I didn't add any of the labels as of yet. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255091 57255091 Pic 5 - New Engine Control Sliders The panel is now one piece of plexi. Now you can see how I labeled the engine controls. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255092 57255092 Pic 6 - New Control Panel Housing 1 These next few pics are of the construction of the new control panel box. This is the top of the box. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255087 57255087 Pic 6 - New Control Panel Housing 2 It's made form sheet plexiglass and a wooden frame. This will make the box a little lighter. You can see the sides are clear for now. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255095 57255095 Pic 8 - New Control Panel Housing 3 This is the backside of the box. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255093 57255093 Pic 9 - New Control Panel Housing 4 This is the bottom of the box. It is now sprayed Black. I'll put one or 2 more coats on depending how good the paint job turns out. More to come! http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=57255094 57255094 Pic 10 - Control Panel Wiring 1 Here is some of the wiring or re-wiring that needed to be done for the control panel. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=59096915 59096915 Pic 11 - Control Panel Wiring 2 A little closer in and you can see that everything is hardwired into place. You can see the power transformers just above the inside of the panel. Those will be moved to another part of the display stand to help keep the wiring out of the way. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=59096912 59096912 Pic 12 - Panel Drawer Test Fit 1 This is a test fitting of the control panel drawer. It is in the retracted position. I am making a pull down door to cover this panel when it's not in use. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=59096913 59096913 Pic 13 - Panel Drawer Test Fit 2 The knob on the front is used to pull the drawer out. As you can see it is pretty much finished. I need to pick up a few more Blue LEDs to finish this off then the control panel will be completely done and I can move on to other details. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=59096914 59096914 Pic 14 - New Plexi for Display Case This is all of the Plexiglass that I will use to encase the entire drydock model. It has all been cut and drilled for final assembly. It still has it's protective layers on it to keep it from getting scratched. The black stripes on some of the pieces are where the glass will attach to the model. This will all be assembled when the re-workings are finished. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=64040557 64040557 Pic 15 - Tension Rod Replacement This pic shows some of the tensioning rods have been removed so that they can be replaces and/or straightened. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991985 63991985 Pic 16 - Tension Rod Repair/ Replace I've had to go over each rod and repair each of them seperately. So far I've finished the entire port side, I've also added details to the gangway tower. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991982 63991982 Pic 17 - Tension Rod Replacement 1 More of the rods had to be removed. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991988 63991988 Pic 18 - Tension Rod Replacement 2 Here are the replacement rods. These of course will be repainted. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991983 63991983 Pic 19 - Tension Rod Replacement 3 As you can see several of the rods needed to be redone. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991984 63991984 Pic 20 - Overhead Module Repair 1 This pic shows that all of these connectors for the overhead modules were repositioned to completely touch the module. I've also added plastic strips to cover some of the larger gaps in the frames. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991986 63991986 Pic 21 - Overhead Module Repair 2 Here you can see a couple of the strips in place. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991987 63991987 Pic 22 - Tension Rod Replacement 4 You can see in this pic how badly warped the rods are on some of the panels. These will be trimmed and refitted. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991989 63991989 Pic 23 - Gangway Detailing This is some of the additional detailing I've added to the Gangway Tower. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=63991990 63991990 Pic 24 - Gangway Repainting 1 Finally thecolor of gangway tower matches the rest of the model. Other areas have been updated as well. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=65282592 65282592 Pic 25 - Gangway Repainting 2 This is an outside view of the tower. I've also painted all of the upper surrounding pieces that where left white. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=65282593 65282593 Pic 26 - Drydock Repair Here is a view of the enitire model now nearly finished. The white band you see by the nacells and up on the top of the modules is a piece of velcro holding the ship in place to prevent it from bouncing. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=65282594 65282594 Pic 27 - Repainting Top Modules 1 The Top Of the overhead modules needed some fresh paint. There were a lot of scratches on the top, So I re-sprayed the entire top. It looks much better now. The news paper is there to protect the ship underneath the modules. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349395 67349395 Pic 28 - Repainting Top Modules 2 I also put paper over the ship itself so absolutely no overspray would ruin the wonderful paintjob. I've also added a couple of the travel pods suspended with a very fine copper wire. The wires will be painted flat. Black. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349396 67349396 Pic 29 - Adding Scale Crewmen 1 Another thing I added were about 50 or so crewmen and/or workers in the hanger bays on the modules. You can view them of course because the force fields are in place protecting them. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349397 67349397 Pic 30 - Adding Scale Crewmen 2 This pic shows I've added a very little and very important detail. If you can't see it, go to the next pic. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349399 67349399 Pic 31 - Adding Scale Crewmen 3 Yep, there he is! The little dude floating around the outside of the ship. These are 1/350 scale sailors that are painted up to resemble the engineering crew as well as other workers. Kinda gives you an idea how big everything would be in real life. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349394 67349394 Pic 32 - Finishing Display Case 1 As of this posting I'm adding the finishing touches of black velvet material to cover all of the exposed wooden frame. Some of this will be covered by the plexiglass as you can see on the right side of the base of the display. Hopefully It will be all complete in the next 2 weeks! See ya next update. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=67349398 67349398 Pic 33 - Adding Scale Crewmen 4 These are the 1/350 scale figures. I've painted these up. Some of them have original series colors as well as some from TMP indicating a change over to the new uniforms. I've placed a lot of them in the drydock hangers as well as the Enterprise Hanger Deck. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=68501186 68501186 Pic 34 - Finishing Display Case - 2 Here is the Plexiglass dust cover in place for it's test fitting. The box will be secured to the display case. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=68501187 68501187 Pic 35 Finishing Display Case 3 Here is a view of the model with the control panel pulled out. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=68501185 68501185 Pic 36 - Finishing Display Case 4 I have the ship secured with it's transport brace to keep the model from bouncing when It gets transported. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=68501189 68501189 Pic 37 -Finishing Display Case 5 The plexiglass is very clear and very light, so it can be removed by one person. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=68501188 68501188 Pic 38 - Adding Pods/Workbees 1 These are the 1/350 scale travel pods, work bees and cargo containers I ordered. They are much more detailed than the ones that come with the kit. When all the decals are added they look much better. Next I'll be scratch building the harnesses that will be connected to the work bees that hold the cargo containers in place while being transported. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=74251535 74251535 Pic 39 - Adding Pods/Workbees 2 These are the starts of the harness and cradle assemblies that will tote the cargo containers on and off of the Enterprise as seen in ST:TMP http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=75518179 75518179 Pic 40 - Workbee/Container Carrier 1 There weren't enough containers for all of the cradles, but the movie shows several of the carriers flying by without any containers in them. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=75518180 75518180 Pic 41 - Workbee/Container Carrier 2 Here is a closer view of the details. I left these pics at a larger format so you can enlarge the pic for details. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=75518178 75518178 Pic 42 - Workbee/Cargo Reference Pic There are not a lot of reference pics of the cradle and harness assemblies so I used this still from ST:TMP and the above reference pic from a technical manual. The actual models are sitting right on top of the pics. http://www.nemvia.net/apps/photos/photo?photoID=75518702 75518702
